Twelve words that come up in every consultation, each in a few honest lines.

Panchang: The Hindu almanac: five limbs of the day, computed fresh for each sunrise. The Kalnirnay on the wall is a printed panchang; PanchangJi computes yours for your own city.
Tithi: The lunar day. Festivals, fasts, and shraddh all go by tithi, which is why they land on a different English date every year.
Muhurat: A window of time chosen for beginning something that matters: a wedding, a griha pravesh, a first day. Computed, not guessed.
Nakshatra: The 27 lunar mansions. The moon's nakshatra at your birth shapes your naming letters and much of the matching arithmetic.
Rashi: Your moon sign in the sidereal zodiac: the sign the moon occupied when you were born. In Jyotish the moon's place matters most.
Lagna: The sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth minute. It sets the frame of the whole kundali, which is why the birth time matters so much.
Kundali: The birth chart, also called the janam patri: every planet's exact position at your birth, drawn as a map. Computed once, read for life.
Dasha: The planetary periods of your life, each ruled by one planet. The mahadasha is the major chapter; the antardasha the sub-chapter inside it.
Gochar: The transits: where the planets are moving now, read against where they stood at your birth. This is how "this year" gets its character.
Navamsha: The ninth divisional chart, read alongside the kundali for marriage. When people say the match should be checked deeply, they mean this.
Mangal dosha: A placement of Mars that tradition treats carefully in matching. It is not one thing, and it is often balanced by the other chart: it deserves a proper reading, not panic.
Shraddh: The annual remembrance of a departed parent, done by their tithi in Pitru Paksha. The tithi moves each year; the duty to remember does not.
